Three Podcast I'm Currently Digging

Searching and finding the right podcast requires serious commitment and dedication! Like Hulu and Netflix, everybody has their series that they are committed to, which makes choosing one difficult. To save you the time of weeding out of the crappy ones (and trust me, there's a lot), I narrowed down three of my favorite ones that I'm currently listening to. If you enjoy history, learning about random facts that you never knew, and music in the '90s, then you will love these picks. If none of those three things appeal to your interests, then chances are these podcasts will not be your cup of coffee, and you should probably leave this post (just joking, folks). If you decide to take me up on my selections and give any of these podcasts a listen, I would love to hear your feedback, good or bad. To enhance your listening experience, may I recommend sitting in a quiet space, lighting a warm tobacco scented candle, and grabbing a cup of coffee.

American Scandal

The history I learned in school compared to the history I learned at home was vastly different. My dad was a history buff, so my sisters and I were not exempt from any black history PBS special. The more I learned outside of school made me realize how shallow and manipulative history textbooks were, which fueled my curiosity even more. So, you can imagine how excited I was when I discovered the Podcast American Scandal as each episode dives deep into American scandals from corporations, politics, sports, and society. If this is your first time listening, I highly recommend you listen to their Federal Activist series. In this series, American Scandal explores the lives of Billie Holiday, Martin Luther King Jr, and Fred Hampton and how J. Edgar Hoover abused his power as the head director of the FBI to silence the civil rights movements.

Jacked "Rise of the New Jack Sound"

In the '90s, the New Jack Swing was in full effect! If the term "New Jack Swing" sounds unfamiliar, then I'm sure the hits that helped propelled the sound will jog your memory. These hits include Bobby Brown's "My Prerogative," Johnny Kemp "Just Got Paid," Wreckx-n-Effect, "Rump Shaker," and Michael Jackson's "Do You Remember the Time. In the '90s, these songs were the soundtrack to my life, but I admit I never knew the history behind the sound that Teddy Riley crafted. This podcast gives listeners like me a chance to learn the new jack swing era's history by peeling back the layers that created and ultimately destroyed the sound leaving a trail of regrets, broken spirits, and mended friendships. On each episode, you hear directly from people involved in the new jack swing movement, like from members of the group Guy and other artists from Uptown Records at the time. Taji P. Henson narrates the podcast as it's told in a story format, making it easy to follow. I highly recommend you give this a listen, and I'm sure you will go back and download all the songs you hear throughout the episodes that will make you reminisce over a golden time in music.

 Stuff You Should Know Podcast

Have you wondered who gets to name continents? Why squirrels bury their nuts and forget? And how the escape from Alcatraz worked? I know these are random and odd questions, but all of these questions are answered and more on the "Stuff You Should Know" podcast. I can't remember how I came across this podcast, but I'm so grateful that I did because it's become my new addiction. Stuff You Should Know is a podcast that explains little stuff you should know in a comical but educational format describing the topic down to its bare essence while revealing its complexities. The host Chuck Bryant and Josh Clark, have a tremendous on-air relationship that makes this show enjoyable and entertaining. If you're naturally a curious person and enjoy learning new things for yourself and to share with other people, this is the podcast for you. However, I also understand that this podcast may not be a lot of people's cup of tea because of the moderate pace and lack of effects to keep you entertained all the way through. If I had to compare this podcast to a TV show, it would be Seinfeld; it's dry humor that anyone can connect with, but it's not at a level that insults your intelligence either. Did that make sense? Either way, don't take my word for it; give a listen and form your own opinion, and if it doesn't entertain you at-least, you can say you learned something new from the episode. That's a fair bargain, right?
